Venice Beach Dinner Club
Holiday dinners on the Venice boardwalk — housed and unhoused neighbors at one long table, with home-cooked food, fresh clothes, haircuts, and interview prep.
For a few holiday seasons — 2018 through 2020 — we closed down a stretch of the Venice boardwalk, set one long table down the middle of it, and had dinner.
The Venice Beach Dinner Club was a community dinner series produced through SpacePost Labs and crowdfunded through the SpacePost and Budman network. The food was home-cooked and healthy, made for the holidays. The table was long on purpose. Everyone who came — housed and unhoused alike — sat at the same one, because that was the entire idea: not a serving line with two sides, but a dinner party among neighbors.
That distinction did the real work. When you pass someone a plate at your own table, you learn their name. By the end of the night somebody had the microphone and half the table was singing. The dinners were a place where ties formed that outlasted the meal — people looking out for each other on the boardwalk they all shared.
Around the table we built a quieter layer of support for the neighbors who needed it: donated professional clothing, volunteer barbers and stylists, and job-interview prep. The idea was no stage, no announcements — a fresh shirt that fit, a good haircut, someone to run practice questions with before a big interview. Offered the way you'd offer anything to a friend at dinner.
The Dinner Club was one thread of the larger SpacePost Labs chapter, alongside the Art of Tech festival and the Crow Language experiments — the same room, pointed at different kinds of care.
